Gwernymynydd Today
Some facts and figures based on the profile produced by Flintshire County Council in May 2005. Figures include Nercwys because the census information is based on the electoral ward.
LOCATION
The village is located on the A 494 below the Clwydian Hills in the West of Flintshire & bordering Denbighshire.
RESIDENT POPULATION & AGE
At the last census the population was 1.776 (Gwernymynydd & Nercwys) of which 50% were male & 50% female. The average age is higher than the national average. There is a higher proportion of middle aged and old people and fewer children than the local & national average.
MARITAL STATUS
There is a lower proportion of single, divorced & widowed people in the village compared with the County & the whole of Wales. There is a higher proportion of married people.
ETHNIC GROUP
Fewer than 1% of the population of the village are from an ethnic minority.
RELIGION
Most identify themselves as Christian and the percentage is higher than both the County & national average. Only one person in 200 is identified as belonging to another religion.
WELSH LANGUAGE
The resident population of the village has the least knowledge of the Welsh language in the whole of Flintshire. Only one in ten claim an understanding of the language compared with a county average of 21.4% and a national figure of 28.4%.
HOUSING & HOUSEHOLDS
In 2001 there were:
- 740 households.
- No registered residential homes.
- Fewer one person households, fewer lone parent with dependent children households and fewer pensioners living alone than the County or national average.
- Five out of six homes owner occupied.
- 7.7% of households described as Council housing.
- Few households without central heating and none lacking modern facilities.
HEALTH & PROVISION OF VOLUNTARY CARE
More people in the area generally claimed “good” health than the Flintshire or national average. Fewer people in the area reported suffering from long-term illness than the national or County average.
The reported level of people who are supporting relatives, friends or neighbours because of illness or disability is higher than the county average and 22% above the national average.
STUDENTS & QUALIFICATIONS
According to the last census there are:
- More students as a proportion of the population than the county average although the figure is below the national average.
- Fewer residents with no qualifications than the County or national average.
- 70% more graduates than the county average and one third above the national average for Wales & England.

IN 2001 the 884 residents were employed and the main areas of employment and the comparisons with the county & the whole of England & Wales are shown in the following table:

CAR OWNERSHIP
In 2001 10% (19.1) households in the village had no car, 40.7% (43.8) had one, 37.7% (29.4)had two or more, 8.8% (5.8) had three or more and 2.7%(1.8) had four or more. The percentage for the County is in brackets.
TRAVEL TO WORK
In 2001, of the 884 people in employment:
- 11.6% (7.8) worked from home.
- 1.8% (3.9) travelled to work by bus.
- 74.4% (68.3) travelled in their own car.
- 5.9% (8.3) travelled as a passenger in a car to work.
