November 2009 Community Council
Remembrance Day 11am: Sunday November 8th This November, after many years of service for which we thank him sincerely, The Rev. Dr. McCabe will not be conducting the service at the War Memorial, having decided to take well -deserved retirement. Instead, we welcome and thank very much, the Rev. Mary Brotherston of Mold. A Poppy wreath is to be laid on behalf of the community by Mr. Albert Phipps of Maes-y-Wern who served in the Royal Navy during the 2nd World War. Before being moved from its original site alongside the A494, Mr. Phipps made it his responsibility to care for the Memorial and its surrounds. The members are hoping that in view of the many losses suffered in the war in Afghanistan this year, as many people as possible will attend the service. It was hoped that 19 year-old Adam Wootton of Cadole who recently served in Afghanistan could attend alongside our veteran Albert Phipps, unfortunately his army duties prevent this. Remembrance Garden Volunteers When the War Memorial was moved from its original site alongside the Mold-Ruthin Road to the Centre grounds in 2002, Helen and John Tomlinson of Hafod Road volunteered to care for the Remembrance Garden. Now, almost eight years later, they wish to retire. We will always be grateful to this modest couple who wanted no public acknowledgement. However we feel we cannot let their long public service and retirement pass without expressing our sincere thanks for their hard work and dedication. Village Centre chairman Keith Taylor said the Garden has always been much admired by residents and visitors alike and the Centre committee would always be grateful for the couple’s initiative. Community Council Steering Group At an earlier meeting of the Village Development Plan steering committee this month, Vice-chairman Chris Bradshaw said 10% of residents had returned the completed questionnaires recently distributed throughout Gwernymynydd and Cadole. However at the next meeting a week later, a further 5% had been returned making 82 in all- which the group considers a very good response. At this meeting, two teams summarised the questions -around a dozen categories, which are to be analysed. A further meeting takes place on November 2nd.and a report on the findings will be circulated to every household early in 2010. Chairman Elwyn Owens praised the hard and time-consuming work of Cllr. Bradshaw. The next two meetings of the full Community Council are on Thursday October 29th and November 26th at the Village Centre starting at 7.15pm. .
